J5 GBL’s Environmental Services experts provide turnkey solutions with an integrated approach to site remediation based on years of proven, practical experience that includes a body of knowledge gained via lessons learned on past projects.  The extraordinary technical and professional management capabilities of our team have been honed over years of working on remediation and restoration projects.

We offer broad-based solutions for soil, sediment and groundwater contamination, often facing ancillary issues.  These issues have ranged from vapor intrusion/vapor migration, surface water and wetlands impacts, air pollution concerns and human health/ecological risks associated with exposure to environmental contamination.

J5 GBL’s Environmental Services team has successfully supported government, industrial and commercial clients. With a team comprised of engineers, project managers, construction managers and health and safety professionals, we are committed to creating a successful and safe environment. Our team has completed numerous site assessments, remedial action plans and redevelopment plans. These projects have complex environmental issues

requiring sustainable solutions involving air, soil, wastewater and groundwater contamination.

Beyond the projects, J5 GBL understands environmental justice and what it means to communities affected by it. J5 was birthed in a community stricken by environmental injustice. This has served as a constant reminder of why it is important for companies to take a proactive approach to ensure a community is safe from environmental mishaps.

Current/Previous Projects

(Columbus Mississippi)

This 90-acre Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp Project site located in Columbus, Mississippi includes a former chemical manufacturing facility and residential properties.  Former operators used creosote and creosote coal tar solutions to make pressure-treated wood products and pentachlorophenol (PCP) for wood treating. The EPA put the site on the Superfund Program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 2011 because of contaminated groundwater, sediment and soil caused by facility operations. There are businesses, neighborhoods and schools, including low-income and minority residents, surrounding the site.

Since 2015, J5’s Mississippi office provides support to the Greenfield Environmental Trust at the Kerr-McGee Columbus facility.  J5 is providing both on-site and off-site environmental consulting and remedial services at the Kerr-McGee Columbus facility. J5 assistance includes:

  • Closure activities under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Corrective Action program and state oversight

  • Soil Excavation and Remediation in the surface impoundment

  • Operation of the groundwater pump-and-treat system

  • Sampling activities in and around the site

  • Remediation and Construction activities in and around the site

  • Operation of the on-site groundwater recovery and treatment system

  • Sampling and analyses to complete characterization of the former Kerr-McGee site, as well as private properties and ditches offsite

(Navassa, North Carolina)

This 300-acre Kerr-McGee Chemical Corp Project site located in Navassa, North Carolina includes the area where Kerr- McGee Chemical Corporation operated a wood-treating plant from 1936 to 1980.  EPA placed the site on the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 2010 because of contaminated groundwater, soil and sediment caused by facility operations.

Wood-treating operations generated wastewater that was disposed of in ponds onsite and wastewater discharged into the marsh on the south end of the facility. There are businesses, neighborhoods and schools, including low-income and minority residents, surrounding the site.

Since 2016, the J5 North Carolina office has provided support to the Greenfield Environmental Trust at the Kerr-McGee Navassa facility. J5 is providing both onsite and offsite environmental consulting and remedial services as well as community involvement services at Kerr-McGee. Activities include:

  • Soil Excavation and Remediation

  • Sampling and analysis activities in and around the site

  • Construction and Remediation services

  • Community outreach meetings with residences

  • Availability session preparation

  • Negotiation facilitation among multiple stakeholders
